Chatswood Junior Rugby Club are based in a traditional rugby stronghold, Sydney’s North Shore. Anecdotally, this areas has become a tremendously difficult area to recruit new players to the club due to the changing demographic of the surrounding areas, to potentially non traditional rugby ethnicities.
It is also thought that football is becoming a major sport in the area too.
Chatswood were experiencing a significant drop in numbers and a potentially worrying trend year on year. From 2012, the club dropped from 391 to 299 in the space of three years.
They set about trying to get an understanding of their club and its make up. Where their participants attend school? In what suburbs did they live? How many families did the club have?
They surveyed this information, hoping to get a better understanding of their environment, their players, and subsequently improve both retention and recruitment.
