Insurance
  • All registered participants (not just the players) at your Club are covered by the Rugby Australia insurance programme. Players and volunteers should all be registered on Rugby Xplorer
  • The programme doesn’t cover any expenses that are covered in anyway by Medicare (so for example physio expenses can be claimed but not the gap between a surgeons fees and the Medicare rebate).
  • There is an excess payable on certain claims.
  • The claims process for participants starts with notifying Rugby Australia of the injury via the link Serious Injuries | Rugby Australia

Insurance FAQ's

Insurance FAQ answered by the insurance provider

The Rugby National Risk Insurance Programme is arranged by Aon Risk Services Australia Limited (‘Aon’) in partnership with Rugby Australia Limited (‘RA’) on behalf of all the member unions, clubs and participants nationwide and provides basic cover for participants who suffer injuries arising out of participation in Rugby and Public Liability, Professional Indemnity and Management Indemnity insurance for Clubs.

Participation in the programme is compulsory for all Clubs competing in competitions managed by the RA and/or Member Unions, and a National Participant Insurance Levy is payable by participants upon registration.

The program covers all players, coaches, trainers, managers, administrators, voluntary workers, selectors, referees, touch judges, ball boys, medical officers, physiotherapists and ambulance officers; and all directors, officers, employees, executive officers, office bearers, members and committees of the Club or Union.

Cover extends to players while – Playing in official club or representative matches. As well as: organised training, travelling between home / work and training or games, staying away from home for a tour, and administrative and social activities of the Club / Union.

Overseas Players

Players who are not residents of Australia and playing for your club will be eligible for claims under the Non-Medicare Medical Expense section of the Rugby National Risk Programme, however they may not be protected (depending on their individual circumstances) under Medicare, potentially leading to uninsured and/or non recoverable medical expenses.

It would be prudent to explore what separate medical cover is available for overseas players who are not entitled to Medicare. Consideration should also be given to cover for injuries which may occur outside their duties for your club as well as illness.

Details of reciprocal health care agreements can be found at Services Australia.

Overseas players not entitled to Medicare should obtain appropriate travel insurance before travelling to Australia or take-out private health insurance whilst in Australia tailored for non-residents. Some of the Private Health Funds offer cover for overseas residents, information can be found on their websites.

Travel insurance

It is recommended that additional Travel Insurance be effected for all players, coaches and officials when traveling on overseas rugby trips connected with the club. Note that general travel policies may not extend to medical or related expenses when playing rugby, so a tailored policy may be required.
