Should you wear a professionally fitted mouthguard or is one from the chemist / pharmacy ok?
In this video NSW Waratahs team doctor Dr Sharron Flahive and physiotherapist Katie Ryan discuss the benefits of professionally made mouthguards, but why it's important to wear a mouthguard at all times.
Key points:
- The better the fit of the mouthguard, the more likely kids are to wear them to play
- Professionally fitted mouthguards will decrease the risk of dental injuries and fracturing a jaw
- There is a link with a decreased risk of concussion
- The ‘no mouthguard, no play’ philosophy
- Some protection is better than none, so a mouthguard bought from a pharmacy and fitted as per instructions is better than nothing
- Even at the professional level players will sometimes forget their mouthguard, and will use a pharmacy-bought mouthguard in that situation
